1.5 million euros to build new Aguilas roundabout and improve RM-D14 road

This increasingly busy stretch of road, which is in poor condition, is due an overhaul before the year is out
The Town Council in
Águilas has just revealed a massive investment project that aims to give a much-needed overhaul to one of the best stretches of road in the municipality this year.
Regional Minister for Public Works and Development, José Manuel Pancorbo, together with the Mayor of Águilas, Mari Carmen Moreno, announced the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of the RM-14 with the RM-D15, with the aim of improving traffic conditions and the quality of the road.
The Mayor said, “We are very happy that this work is finally going to be undertaken, because it is very necessary. Yesterday I was talking to the municipal technicians and we were looking at the dossier and it is now nine years since the Town Hall ceded the availability of this land to the Regional Government for the construction of this important roundabout for the RM-D14 and RM-D15 road in the municipality of Águilas.”
With the construction of the AP-7 toll motorway, traffic increased “notably” on this section of road and now exceeds 5,500 vehicles per day. It communicates with the district of Calabardina and with various urbanisations such as Los Geráneos, Collados Zieschang, Collados Weis and Todosol. For this reason, traffic increases substantially in summer. It is also a great little road for a
day out in the car or on the bike.
The project to build the roundabout has already been put out to tender and will soon be put into operation, with a budget of 476,770 euros.
Pancorbo explained, “This work will solve the road safety problems on the section in question. From the Public Works Department we will change the T-junction that currently exists, which causes numerous accidents, for a complete roundabout that remodels and transforms the area, for which we are going to allocate almost half a million euros.”
In addition, a contract for nearly 1 million euros for road surface reinforcement works on the RM-D14 road linking Águilas with the Ermita del Garrobillo, from kilometre point 3.5 to 6.5 (from the Decathlón to the Garrobillo crossroads), has already been put out to tender.
This part of the work will have a base tender budget of 996,265 euros and a four-month completion period, with working expected to start after the summer. The road surface will be reinforced and road safety will be improved in the area around the entrance to the Los Geráneos urbanisation. This work will improve traffic conditions as well as drainage when it rains.
These road improvement projects also include the conditioning of the cycle path which the Águilas Town Council has recently built between the town centre and Calabardina and which runs along the side of the RM-D14 and RM-D15 roads closest to the coast. Finally, the lighting of the roundabout has been designed with fiberglass lamp posts and LED lights powered by solar panels.
