Murcia welcomes summer with rain, but that won’t stop the heat this week

Parts of the Region of Murcia are due to feel suffocating temperatures this week, with daytime maximums regularly in excess of 30ºC and as high as a predicted 38ºC in Murcia capital city and its surroundings on Thursday and Sunday.

It will be mostly sunny from Monday June 19 onwards, though Tuesday morning may bring a gentle smattering of rain in Caravaca de la Cruz and Wednesday afternoon will bring heavier rain and some thunderstorms in the rest of the north and west of the Region.

Murcia weather forecast, Wednesday June 21

Wednesday June 21 is the start of official summertime, and this Friday night Spain celebrates its summer solstice San Juan festival with people jumping over bonfires on the beaches.

After Wednesday’s showers – which shouldn’t dampen proceedings too much as they will be short-lived and the coastal areas of Murcia will remain untouched – sunshine is forecast for the rest of the week and temperatures will rise even further, up to 38ºC in Murcia city, Molina de Segura and Archena.

As ever, the costal areas will be several degrees cooler than this, but still above 30ºC and not below 20ºC at night.

It remains to be seen whether extreme weather warnings will be issued for the risks associated with high temperatures as these are only released a maximum of three days in advance and are updated constantly.

In any case, to avoid dehydration and overheating, it is advisable not to undertake any strenuous physical exertion during the hottest parts of the day, and to drink plenty of water.
