Alicante octogenarian fined for leaving a box beside a bin
The 80-year-old Costa Blanca resident insists she properly disposed of her rubbish
Complaints about rubbish bags and tree cuttings piling up around public bins are never-ending throughout every city and town in Spain, so it may seem a little extreme that one elderly woman was fined by Alicante City Council for reportedly dumping an empty box beside a waste container.
The events date back to September, when the woman, who is in her 80s, went to throw out her rubbish in the municipal bins near her home as usual. She claims that she put a cardboard box in the recycling container.
Somehow though, the offending box ended up on the ground beside the bin and, several months later, she received a fine in the post for allegedly “depositing unfolded cardboard boxes outside the container”.
The authorities tracked their ‘culprit’ down thanks to a label with her name and address on the box, but the Alicante resident is fighting the sanction, insisting that she disposed of her waste properly and the fact that it was found dumped proves absolutely nothing.
According to the octogenarian herself, “the fine they gave me does not make any sense”, since she believes that it has been imposed “without having real evidence”.
Explaining what she thinks happened, the woman pointed out that “it is common for there to be people searching in the trash at night,” so the cardboard that incriminated her “could have been knocked out by anyone.”
She requested a meeting with the Councillor for Cleaning of the Alicante City Council, Manuel Villar, with the aim of having her fine quashed, as soon as she received the notice. However, given the total lack of response from the councillor, the resident paid the penalty to take advantage of the discount.
“If I didn’t pay it on time, they are capable of charging me double,” she concluded.
