Andalucía airports record strong April growth as Málaga leads the way
Málaga remains the region’s busiest airport after another busy month for travel across Andalucía
Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport continued its strong run in April, with 2,613,939 passengers passing through its terminals, according to Aena figures. That was a rise of 9.5% on the same month last year, while aircraft movements also climbed to 17,681, up 6.7%.The airport’s performance helped drive a wider boost across Andalucía, where airports handled 3,860,848 passengers in April, up 10.8% year on year. Across the region there were 34,521 operations during the month, showing that air travel demand remains firmly on the rise.
Málaga remains the region’s busiest airport by some distance. It was followed in April by Seville, which handled 961,311 passengers, up 11.5%, and by Granada, with 106,479 travellers, up 13.6%. Almería also saw a strong increase, with 90,817 passengers and growth of 30.3%. Jerez recorded 79,921 passengers, Córdoba 5,003 and Algeciras heliport 3,378.
The picture was also positive on the operations side, with Málaga leading the way again on 17,681 movements. Seville followed with 6,972, then Jerez with 4,882, Granada with 2,074, Almería with 1,347, Córdoba with 1,313 and Algeciras heliport with 252.
or the year to date, Málaga has already handled 7,706,614 passengers and 53,877 landings and take-offs between January and April. That puts it firmly in fourth place nationally, behind Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat and Palma de Mallorca. It also means Málaga is growing faster than the Aena average, with passenger traffic up 7.4% compared with 3.7% across the Spanish network.
International traffic continues to do most of the heavy lifting. Of the more than 7.69 million commercial passengers recorded so far this year at Malaga, 6,339,937 were on international routes and 1,350,525 on domestic services. The United Kingdom remains the main source market, with 1,598,401 passengers so far this year, well ahead of Germany, the Netherlands and Italy.
In April alone, British travellers again led the way, with 603,726 passengers using Málaga airport. That underlines just how important the UK market remains for the Costa del Sol, and why Málaga continues to be one of Spain’s most dynamic airports.
