Andalucía weekend weather forecast September 17-20: Storms and heavy rain signal a change in the season
A dramatic drop in temperatures on the Mediterranean coast as thunderstorms sweep through the east, with calmer, milder conditions to follow
This week we noted that Andalucía hasn´t quite been ready to call time on summer, with highs still touching 34°C. But as we come into the weekend the region gets less of a choice in the matter. Thursday opens with serious storm warnings across the east and a sharp fall in Mediterranean temperatures, marking one of those abrupt seasonal shifts the south of Spain occasionally serves up with very little warning.Thursday September 17

Rainfall and storm warnings are in place for Almería, Córdoba, Granada, Jaén and Málaga, and the far east in particular faces a difficult morning, with showers and thunderstorms that could be locally very heavy and persistent during the first half of the day. From midday, the storm risk spreads more broadly across the eastern half of the region, with further showers and thunderstorms possible in the mountains. Temperatures drop notably, with the Mediterranean coast and eastern third seeing some of the most significant falls.

Andalucía weather forecast, Friday September 18Conditions ease considerably, though Almería holds onto its rainfall warning with showers still possible along the coast, becoming more intense in the far east as the day goes on. Partly cloudy skies with mid- and high-level cloud, and temperatures beginning to recover along the Atlantic coast while holding steady elsewhere. Seville, away from the eastern action, should see a calmer and more manageable day. Moderate to strong easterly winds in the Strait of Gibraltar are worth noting. Winds elsewhere are light to moderate and variable.
Saturday September 19
Andalucía weather forecast, Saturday September 19A much more settled picture across most of Andalucía. Partly cloudy skies with some low cloud along the Mediterranean coast in the morning. There's still a chance of occasional light rain on the Mediterranean side as cloud builds in the mountains during the day, but nothing significant. Córdoba climbs back to 35°C as temperatures recover inland, and the Atlantic coast continues to warm. Strong easterly gusts along the eastern Mediterranean coast and around the Strait of Gibraltar are the main thing to keep an eye on, with very strong gusts possible in exposed spots. Huelva, on the far Atlantic side, should escape most of that.
Sunday September 20
Andalucía weather forecast, Sunday September 20Much like Saturday in character, with partly cloudy skies and low cloud along the Mediterranean coast easing through the morning. Occasional light rain remains possible on the coast, and the easterly gusts along the eastern Mediterranean and the Strait continue. Tarifa will feel those winds keenly. Temperatures rise a little inland, with Cádiz seeing broadly unchanged conditions. A quieter end to what has been an eventful few days.
Thursday's storms will likely feel like a turning point looking back. After weeks of unrelenting heat, Andalucía finally gets a reminder that the calendar has moved on, even if the weekend recovers quickly enough to soften the blow.
