Benidorm police appeal after funeral urn left behind in supermarket locker

Officers say it's one of the strangest items they've ever had to reunite with its owner

Benidorm's Local Police are no strangers to dealing with lost property during the busy summer season. Every year they're asked to reunite holidaymakers with forgotten passports, wallets, mobile phones and car keys.

This week, however, they came across something they had never expected to find.

A funeral urn containing human ashes was discovered inside a locker at a Benidorm supermarket after it had apparently been forgotten by a customer.

The unusual discovery came to light when staff checked the lockers and found the urn still inside. The supermarket manager contacted the Local Police, who have since been trying to trace its owner or the relatives of the deceased.

According to police spokesperson Quique Tortosa, officers are used to handling all kinds of misplaced belongings during the tourist season, but finding someone's ashes is believed to be a first.

So far, efforts to identify the family have been unsuccessful, leaving police with one of the most unusual lost property cases they've ever dealt with.

In the hope of solving the mystery, the force has appealed through its social media channels asking anyone who recognises the urn or knows who it belongs to to get in touch with Benidorm Local Police.

If nobody comes forward, the urn won't simply be added to the lost property office. Instead, police say it will be transferred to Benidorm Municipal Cemetery, where it will be kept safe until it can be claimed by the deceased's family.
