Brit arrested after 7kg of cocaine found in car at Denia ferry port

Driver detained as drugs discovered in secret compartment on route from Costa Blanca to Balearic Islands

A 62-year-old British man has been remanded in custody after officers at the port of Denia, near Benidorm, found more than seven kilos of cocaine hidden inside his car as he prepared to board a ferry to the Balearic Islands. The vehicle, which had foreign plates and was occupied only by the driver, was stopped during what the Guardia Civil described as “a preventive check.”

During the inspection, officers noticed “a structural modification of the vehicle which was incompatible with its original design.” That prompted a much more detailed search, in which they located “a compartment specially prepared for the job” containing several vacuum-packed bags of white powder that later tested positive for cocaine. A small amount of cash was also seized, along with the car itself.

The driver was brought before the courts and a judge leading the ongoing criminal investigation has ordered that he be held in custody while inquiries continue. Well-placed sources say the detainee is British, although his exact home area in the UK has not been specified.

The force added that “the Civil Guard is continuing its investigations to find out the origin and intended destination of the drugs seized and further arrests have not been ruled out.”

The arrest comes around four months after another British man, aged 27, was stopped at the same port as he tried to travel from Benidorm to Ibiza, with around seven kilos of cocaine valued at an estimated £300,000 found in a hidden compartment between the front seats of his car.
