Cala Ferris Torrevieja
Cala Ferris, a rural oasis between the built-up areas of Torrevieja and Orihuela
A tranquil rural setting and fewer crowds even in summer
For the most part, Torrevieja’s beaches can be classified as either urban or semi-urban, but Cala Ferris is the exception.
It lies towards the south-western end of Torrevieja’s coastline, between Cala Piteras to the south and the residential areas of Mar Azul and La Veleta to the north, and behind it are dunes and palm trees which provide relief from the almost unbroken residential areas which occupy the seafront in most of Torrevieja and Orihuela. This idyllic setting is enjoyed by both visitors and local residents throughout the year, and is ideal for a morning walk: there is a constant stream of dog-walkers enjoying their morning constitutionals.
Anglers also enjoy the rocky coast which lies either side of the cove itself, and in summer Cala Ferris is very popular with bathers who prefer to get away from the high-rise backdrop and intense activity of the urban beaches. Parking is easy and free here – simply turn off the N-332 at the junction with the CV-95, head for the shore and turn right, and park near the end of the residential area.
The beach itself is not large – “cala” means “cove”, after all – but along its 200-metre length there is a narrow strip of sand which is ideal for a day of getting away from the hustle and bustle which tend to be part and parcel of other beaches.
Of course, being out of the town centre does have its disadvantages. Cala Ferris is not as well-appointed as its neighbours in the centre of town, and as a result it cannot fly the Blue Flag which has been awarded to five Torrevieja beaches. Don’t expect beach bars, shops, volleyball nets, pedal-boats or sunbed hire here: this is considered to be an isolated beach, despite its location in the heart of the southern Costa Blanca.
However, for many people the only requisites for a day at the beach are sun, sea and sand, and Cala Ferris certainly has plenty of all three!
