Centro para la Artesanía, regional crafts exhibition and sales centre in Lorca
The regional artisan centre offers traditional Murcian crafts from a wide selection of craftsmen
The Centro para la Artesanía de Lorca is a dedicated sales and display space showcasing traditional crafts in the centre of the historic city of Lorca, and offers colourful displays of the traditional trades of the Region of Murcia, all at "straight from the artisans prices".
The building in which it is housed stands between the Palacio de los Guevara and the church of San Mateo, and was built by the regional government specifically for the purpose it now serves, offering a large display in an attractive, open space.
Not only are there numerous items on display, but there are also plenty of opportunities to buy craftsmanship produced by registered craftsmen and women, and there is a workshop on the ground floor, complete with loom, where demonstrations are often given.
You'll find lots of different crafts represented in this space, including ceramics, jewellery, glass, fabrics, rugs, woodwork, paintings, gastronomic items and leather, all produced locally and at very accessible prices, with items available from just a couple of euros.
There are many small pieces which can easily be packed into a suitcase as gifts or momentos, and the centre offers a free wrapping service for articles which are being given as gifts.
In amongst the hand-made craft items are also selected artisan food products, including wine, regional honey and honey products including hand-made honey sweets, and even the flavoursome ground red pepper made from the round Murcian peppers which grow in the municipality at the end of the summer, along with a selection of wine jams, chutneys and preserves.
So if you're looking for a well-priced and special momento of a visit to Lorca or the Murcia Region, then come and see the centre: you'll be spoilt for choice!
