Clothing recycler arrested after dumping tons of used clothes across Alicante

Policía Nacional detains 39-year-old man accused of fraudulently abandoning dozens of tons in rented warehouses

A 39-year-old man has been arrested in Alcoy by the Policía Nacional on charges of fraud and damage. He allegedly rented industrial warehouses and plots, including one in Orihuela, to dump dozens of tons of used clothing instead of managing it environmentally as promised. The case came to light after the owner of a warehouse and plot in Orihuela reported him for not paying rent.

She had leased the spaces to a man who presented himself as involved in buying, selling, and exporting textiles. When he stopped paying the monthly instalments, she tried to contact him without success and visited the site. There she discovered the land had been turned into an uncontrolled dump for used clothing. Trucks continued to arrive on his instructions to unload more, while he charged others for recycling services, only to abandon the items in rented spaces. Police found he had defrauded at least two other people in the area with the same scheme.

The cost of proper clean-up is steep. Treating each ton through authorised companies costs between 100 and 200 euros, with transport at about 1,000 euros per truck. The Orihuela owner estimates it will require more than 50 trucks for her site alone, totalling around 120,000 euros. Officers located and arrested the suspect in Alcoy, where he had reportedly repeated the activity. He was brought before the duty magistrate's court in Alcoy, and the investigation continues into a possible environmental crime.
