Endangered species spotted swimming in Condado de Alhama lake
Two breeding pairs of White-headed Duck have been found in the improved lake environment

Two pairs of the endangered White-headed Duck (Oxyura leucocephala) have been spotted with eight ducklings each in the lake at Condado de Alhama Golf Resort, prompting celebration among environmental advocates and residents alike. They were spotted swimming near a pair of flamingos in the water recently.
The sighting comes as part of a broader initiative to restore and enhance the ecological balance of the area. According to the resort’s owners’ association, this welcome development follows the recent implementation of phase two of an environmental improvement plan agreed with Alhama de Murcia Town Council.
“This is wonderful news,” the association stated, adding that the presence of these ducks not only confirms the lake’s improving condition but also offers renewed hope for the survival of a species that is both protected and classified as endangered.
The measures include the installation of aerating fountains to improve water quality. Some components for these systems have already been received and installation will proceed once the remainder arrives later this month.
Work around the lake had been intentionally delayed to avoid disturbing the breeding period of the White-headed Duck.
“The measures taken have been positive, for which we would like to thank you for your patience and understanding,” the association said.
The White-headed Duck is native to Spain and parts of North Africa and Asia, but has suffered a serious decline in population due to habitat loss and hybridisation with non-native species. Its presence at the resort’s lake is being seen as a significant ecological milestone and a strong argument for continuing conservation efforts.
