Foreign man, 25, dies in Torrevieja shoot-out

One person has been arrested after Saturday night's fatal shooting near Playa del Cura

A 25-year-old Algerian man died on Saturday April 19 after being shot in the entrance hall of a building on Calle Bergantín in Torrevieja, close to Playa del Cura beach. The Guardia Civil confirmed the death, with emergency services called to the scene at around 10.30pm following reports of gunshots on a public street.

A SAMU emergency medical unit attended and treated the young man for gunshot wounds to his shoulder and armpit, but despite advanced resuscitation attempts, paramedics were unable to save him and pronounced him dead at the scene, according to the CICU emergency coordination centre.

According to the Guardia Civil, the gunman fired up to six shots from the street into the building's entrance hall through a window, with bullet impacts found on the windows, walls and railings inside. Initial indications suggest the attacker had been waiting for the victim and fled the scene on a motorcycle afterwards.

Four other people who shared the property with the deceased were taken to the Guardia Civil station for questioning and one person has since been arrested in connection with the incident, although it hasn't been confirmed whether that individual is the alleged shooter.

Investigators believe the killing may have been a targeted attack and a settling of scores. It has also recently emerged that around a month ago, a separate armed confrontation took place in the same area of the street, in which the victim himself was allegedly involved in an attack on a rival group, leaving another Algerian man wounded.

The shooting comes after a separate incident in the nearby area on March 1, when 33-year-old Czech national Michael Maly was killed in the Rocío del Mar area of Rojales. Maly had previously been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the murder of Northern Irishman John George.
