Gas bottle delivery drivers announce strike in Spain

Around 6 million households in Spain could miss out on their butano delivery next month

A strike by bottled butane (butano) gas delivery workers in Spain is set to cause chaos for millions of households and businesses across the country.

The Spanish Federation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Distributors (FEDGLP) has announced that around 6 million households could miss out on their butane deliveries next month and in the run-up to Christmas, as workers demand better pay and working conditions.

The strike is a result of the industry's failure to update the regulations that govern butane delivery drivers' pay and working conditions. The current rate of 0.53 euros per kilo for the logistics and marketing of butane cylinders has not been revised in more than a decade, according to the Federation, despite growing operating costs that make it unsustainable for workers to continue providing the service.

FEDGLP is demanding a minimum remuneration of 4.80 euros per cylinder, which is significantly higher than the current rate. The organisation argues that this is necessary to cover the costs of home delivery and to ensure the sustainability of the service.

Strikes are planned for November 5, 13, 21 and 29, as well as December 5, 11, 17 and 23, but the industry has warned that the industrial action could continue into the new year if its demands aren’t met.

During the industrial action, home delivery of gas cylinders will be suspended, affecting both individual households and businesses.

However, customers will still be able to buy their butano bottles at the usual public outlets like service stations, and the drivers have committed to supplying educational, health and social care centres, senior citizens' homes and non-profit institutions.

The strike is expected to cause significant disruption to households across Spain, particularly those who rely on butane for heating and cooking. With the bus driver strike already causing chaos across the country, this latest development is likely to add to the frustration and inconvenience felt by many.
