Heatwave ends but sweltering heat remains: Spain weather forecast August 18-21

The second summer heatwave, which has brought Spain to its knees, will officially come to an end this week

Over the weekend, the second heatwave of the summer saw some unbelievable temperatures recorded, particularly in southern Spain. The municipality of Montoro in Cordoba was the hottest place in the country, registering an incredible 44.7ºC on Saturday August 16, while five other locations in Andalucía made it into the top 10.

Bur we’re not out of the woods yet. According to Aemet, the heatwave should grind to a halt this Tuesday August 19, but not before we endure one more day of unbearable temperatures.

Monday August 18

The Region of Murcia and the Valencian Community have been issued with red heat warnings until 9pm on Monday for temperatures that could reach a staggering 44ºC. Weather warnings have been issued in several other parts of the country, including orange alerts in Andalucía, the Balearic Islands and Catalonia.

As an Atlantic air mass moves in, travelling from west to east across Spain, we can expect more cloud cover than on previous days. The entire east of the country will become overcast towards evening and occasionally heavy showers and thunderstorms are forecast. On top of this, there is a likelihood of suspended dust pretty much everywhere.

Tuesday August 19

The front will continue passing through mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands on Tuesday, bringing a welcome gust of cooler Atlantic air. As a result, day-time temperatures will drop across the board as the heatwave officially ends, and it will be particularly noticeable in the southeast of the country.

However, even here the mercury will continue to exceed 35ºC.

Persistent rain is forecast in much of northern Spain and thunderstorms and heavy showers could extend to the Balearic Islands and the east of the country.

Wednesday August 20

Much of northern Spain can expect a deluge of rain on Wednesday and the showers are likely to spread as far south as northern Alicante. The rest of the country will enjoy a mostly clear and sunny day.

A yellow weather alert for temperatures above 35ºC Region of Murcia has again been activated in the Region of Murcia but elsewhere, the thermometers will continue to fall.

Thursday August 21

All of the heat and storm alerts have been lifted for Thursday, although northern Spain can expect more rain and thunderstorms throughout the day. Elsewhere, partly cloudy to medium to high cloud cover is forecast, with a chance of afternoon showers and stormy episodes in the Balearic Islands and eastern Spain.

Daytime temperatures will begin to climb in the west of the country but continue their steady decline everywhere else.
