Heatwave peaks before temperatures ease: Spain weather forecast June 22-25

Spain faces another scorching few days with temperatures above 40°C in many areas before a slight drop arrives later in the week

Spain's first major heatwave of the summer is set to dominate the weather over the next few days, bringing extreme daytime temperatures, uncomfortable nights and heat warnings across much of the country. Large parts of mainland Spain will continue to see temperatures well above average for late June, with some areas expected to climb into the low to mid-40s.

The hottest conditions will affect inland regions, particularly the south, centre and parts of the northeast. Many coastal areas will also remain very warm, especially overnight, making it difficult to get a comfortable night's sleep.

Although a gradual change is expected later in the week, forecasters say the heat isn't disappearing completely. Instead, temperatures should return closer to what would normally be expected at this time of year.

Monday June 22

Monday will be another exceptionally hot day across most of mainland Spain. Temperatures are expected to reach 40°C or higher in the valleys of the Tagus, Guadiana, Guadalquivir and Ebro rivers, with some locations potentially exceeding 42°C.

The Basque Country faces some of the most extreme conditions, with red heat warnings in force in parts of the region. Elsewhere, orange and yellow alerts cover much of the country including Andalucia, Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Aragon, Catalonia, Extremadura and the Balearic Islands.

Night-time temperatures will remain exceptionally high. Many towns and cities will struggle to fall below 20°C after dark and some Mediterranean coastal areas, the Ebro Valley and parts of southern Spain could see temperatures remain above 25°C overnight.

Tuesday June 23

Tuesday is likely to be the hottest day of the week.

Temperatures will change little from Monday and could even rise slightly in some areas. Forecasters expect widespread highs of 38°C to 42°C across inland Spain, with parts of the Guadalquivir Valley potentially reaching 44°C.

The hottest conditions will be found in Andalucia, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid and parts of Aragon. Inland areas of Catalonia and the Ebro Valley will also remain extremely hot.

Most of the country will enjoy sunshine for much of the day, although isolated afternoon storms remain possible over higher ground in northern and eastern Spain.

Another difficult night is expected, particularly along the Mediterranean coast where humidity will make conditions feel even warmer.

Wednesday June 24

Wednesday should mark the beginning of a gradual change, although it won't feel much cooler in many places.

Temperatures are expected to ease slightly in western Spain, including parts of Galicia, Extremadura and western Andalucia. Even so, highs of 40°C to 42°C are still forecast in parts of the northeast and southern mainland Spain.

Sunny skies will continue across most parts, although some afternoon cloud and isolated storms could develop over mountain areas.

The biggest difference may be felt during the evening and overnight period, with some western areas seeing temperatures fall a little lower than in previous nights. Across the Mediterranean coast and the Balearic Islands, however, tropical nights are likely to continue.

Thursday June 25

Thursday brings the most noticeable change of the week as temperatures begin to fall more widely across mainland Spain.

Many inland areas should see temperatures drop by several degrees compared with the start of the week, bringing welcome relief after days of extreme heat. Despite the change, conditions will still feel very summery, particularly across the south and southeast.

Temperatures in the hottest areas are expected to remain in the mid to high 30s, although the widespread 40°C-plus readings seen earlier in the week should become less common.

Sunshine will continue to dominate across most of the country, with only isolated afternoon storms possible in some mountain areas.

Even with the cooler trend, night-time temperatures will remain above average in many places, especially near the Mediterranean coast where warm and humid conditions are expected to linger.
