Murcia hotels break more records with a sizzling summer
The summer of 2024 has been “the best in history” in the Region of Murcia
Now that autumn has officially begun, it’s been revealed that the Region of Murcia's hotels have had a record-breaking summer, with a 3.5% increase in overnight stays in August compared to the same month last year, reaching a total of 439,819 overnight stays.
This marks four consecutive months of growth, and the highest number of visitors in the Region's history.
A record-breaking 170,974 tourists stayed in Murcia's hotels in August, a 5.62% hike compared to 2023. This includes 122,905 Spanish residents (71.89%) and 48,070 foreigners (28.12%), with the latter group showing a significant 15.3% rise on last year.
Hotels in the Region enjoyed an impressive 63.86% occupancy rate in August, with an average daily room rate of 94.15 euros. This represents a 0.1% year-on-year increase, and a 1.29% rise in prices compared to the previous year.
Moreover, the hotel sector employed 6.6% more staff this year thanks to the heightened demand.
While Murcia's hotel trade is undoubtedly thriving, other regions in Spain are also experiencing a boost in tourism.
The Balearic Islands had the highest occupancy rate in August, with 89.9%, followed by the Canary Islands (81.19%) and Catalonia (80.15%). However, some communities, such as Castilla-La Mancha (38.5%), Extremadura (50.1%) and Madrid (54.3%), are lagging well behind.
From January to August, Murcia's hotels welcomed a previously unbeaten 1,028,218 travellers, a 7% increase from the same period last year. Domestic visitors rose by 5.7%, while foreign holidaymakers increased by a pretty impressive 11.5%.
According to Juan Francisco Martínez, director of the Institute of Tourism of the Region of Murcia, the summer of 2024 has been the best on record for the Region's hotels.
Tourist accommodations in Murcia, he said, “have had the best summer in their history, ending July and August with the best results for these two months both in terms of the volume of travellers (335,553) and overnight stays (831,118), and achieving year-on-year increases of 5.7 and 4.3 percent, respectively.”
