Murcia police rescue 27 tiny puppies intended for the black market

Dozens of dogs, cats and birds were found crammed into the boot of a car in La Alberca

A lucky break during a routine traffic patrol on Wednesday February 25 led to the rescue of more than 20 little puppies and other pets intended for sale on the black market.

Local police officers stopped a car in the Murcia district La Alberca and were shocked to find the vehicle’s boot crammed full of cages and crates containing live puppies, older dogs, cats and birds.

Needless to say, the poor animals were being transported in extremely unsanitary and uncomfortable conditions, and neither of the two occupants of the car could produce any documentation for the pets.

Many of the animals were pure-bred and command a huge price tag these days on the black market.

Incredibly, although a complaint was filed against the pair for violating the Law for the Protection of Animal Rights and Welfare, they will avoid jail time, facing a fine instead.

Most importantly, all of the animals were removed by workers from Zoonoses and brought back to their facilities in the town of La Albatalía, where they received full vet checks.

They will be looked after here until loving families can be found to adopt them.
