Murcia wind and snow warnings upgraded to serious risk level
Aemet has issued an orange alert for up to 5 cm of snow on Friday in parts of the Region of Murcia

Residents in parts of the Region of Murcia are being warned to prepare for a burst of wintry weather on Friday March 6, with Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) upgrading its snow alert to orange in some inland areas, which represents a serious risk.
Forecasters explained that temperatures have dropped sharply in recent days and that snow could fall in the northwest of the Region, particularly in higher areas above 1,200 metres. The warning, which initially started as a yellow alert, was raised to orange after updated forecasts suggested that as much as 5cm of snow could settle within 24 hours.
According to Aemet, the alert is set to come into force at 12pm on Friday and will remain in place until midnight.
If the forecast proves accurate, the highest peaks in the Region could once again turn white. Similar scenes were seen in January during Storm Francis, when snow covered areas such as the high ground around Moratalla.
Elsewhere across the Region, skies are expected to remain mostly cloudy with scattered showers during the day. Temperatures will stay low and in some places could fall slightly. Forecasts suggest minimum temperatures of around 8°C in Murcia, about 12°C in Cartagena and roughly 6°C in Lorca.
Inland areas in the north west could see light frosts overnight, with temperatures dipping to around 4°C in Caravaca de la Cruz.
Weather experts also pointed out that the rain expected on Friday could arrive at the same time as a plume of Saharan dust moving across Spain. When this happens it often leads to the so called “mud rain”, leaving a thin layer of reddish dust on cars, terraces and balconies.
Along the coast, conditions are also expected to turn rough. Aemet has issued an orange alert for coastal areas around the Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón, where waves of between 3 and 5 metres are forecast along with gusts that could reach 70 km/h.
Further south, along the coast of the Guadalentín Valley and around Águilas, a yellow alert remains in place for winds of 50 to 60 km/h and waves of up to 3 metres.
