New rubbish tip near La Manga Club and La Unión to open early in 2025
The idea of building this new waste and recycling point is to provide garbage disposal services for people in Pozo Estrecho, La Palma and El Albujón
Cartagena City Council has launched a tender to build a new rubbish waste tip, known in Spain as an 'ecoparque' or ecopark, in the Los Camachos Industrial Estate, around halfway between La Manga Club and the Mar Menor Golf Resort.
This project, which has a budget of 530,438.93 euros, has a stated completion period of four months, so that, barring any unforeseen disruptions, it should be operational by the spring of next year.
Last January, the Region of Murcia government gave a grant of almost 2.5 million euros to carry out projects for the construction and improvement of ecoparks in 13 municipalities across the Region. This aid is co-financed by the European Union's Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR). Cartagena received a total of 300,000 euros.
The new Cartagena tip will be located on a municipal plot of 4,960 square metres, of which 2,117 square metres will be used for the construction of the recycling facilities, which will be on Calle Calcio, Calle Hidrógeno and Calle Cloro.
The facility is designed to meet the demand for domestic waste management from nearby areas such as Pozo Estrecho, La Palma and El Albujón, as well as small businesses in the region. At the new rubbish dump, people will be able to bring sorted waste, such as green waste, electrical appliances, metals and construction materials, which will be temporarily stored before being recycled or disposed of by authorised companies.
The design of the tip includes a public access platform on two levels: a lower area for waste collection by companies and an upper area for private access. The site will have a series of containers for different types of waste, a workshop for the repair of small household appliances and a secure storage area for hazardous waste. In addition, this ecoparque will be fully enclosed and will have an appropriate signage system to ensure the safe use of the facilities.
To facilitate the circulation and safe disposal of waste, the ecopark will include unloading bays, road signs and green areas. The project also includes a drainage and storage network for the management of any possible leaks, thus contributing to the sustainability and environmental protection of the area.
Cartagena currently has two other recycling points open in La Asomada and La Vaguada. The first of these is located next to the rugby field, past the vehicle depot, while the second is on Calle Viña del Mar. They are open from Monday to Friday from 8.30am-1.30pm and 3.30pm-6pm, and on Saturdays from 9am-1pm.
At the recycling points and mobile rubbish collection areas citizens can take packaging, cardboard, glass, waste from minor building work, electrical appliances, computer equipment, furniture, clothes, pruning waste, cooking or motor oil, lead batteries, light bulbs, aerosols, ink cartridges, X-rays, motor oil and even mercury thermometers.
