New Totana railway station to boost Murcia-Almeria AVE with BIM technology

Adif is allocating 9.4 million euros to build a sustainable and accessible station as part of its Strategic Plan 2030

The new Totana railway station, which will be built using Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology, is set to become a key addition to the Murcia-Almería high-speed rail line (AVE).

The public entity responsible for this project, the Administrador de Infraestructuras Ferroviarias (Adif), part of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, has committed an investment of 9.4 million euros for the construction of the station in an infrastructure project that is supposed to mark another significant step towards the modernisation of Spain’s railway system.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of a facility, allowing for more efficient planning and management. By using BIM, Adif will manage detailed information related to both the design and future maintenance of the station.

This methodology is supposed to enable better resource management and construction scheduling, helping to reduce unnecessary costs and avoid complications in future remodelling.

In its drive to update Spain's railway infrastructure, Adif has embraced BIM as a collaborative work model that aims to save time and costs while promoting sustainability. Though no completion date has yet been announced for the Totana station, this development will provide a significant boost to both the Cercanías service and the Murcia-Almeria high-speed line, which forms part of the Mediterranean Corridor connecting Spain with Europe.

This station project is the penultimate construction task for the high-speed corridor between Almeria and Murcia, with only the Vera Almanzora station left in the planning stages. Once completed, Totana station will be accessible, sustainable and well-integrated into its surroundings. It will also enhance the capacity and reliability of the system by enabling the Cercanías service to run on the new high-speed line.

The station will be one of six new stations planned for the region, five of which are already under development: Alhama de Murcia, Librilla, Lorca San Diego, Almendricos and Alcantarilla.

Totana’s new station will be located approximately 500 metres from the existing station, near the high-speed line running through the town. The new facility will include a passenger building featuring a lobby, waiting area, access turnstiles, a ticket sales area, commercial spaces, toilets and technical facilities.

The design of the station will make use of the natural unevenness of the tracks in the area to create a harmonious integration with the surrounding environment, as well as to improve accessibility. After passing through the turnstiles, passengers will access the platforms via stairs or lifts from a lobby and waiting room, which will benefit from ample natural light thanks to a glass façade.

Occupying more than 21,000 square metres, the station will also include a green zone and infrastructure to promote local transport. Additionally, a new road with cycle paths in both directions will provide access to the station.

Totana Town Council has also announced plans to transform the land occupied by the old railway line into green spaces. There are also proposals to repurpose the disused commuter station building for public use.
