November 9 Free guided walk for all the family in the salt flats of San Pedro del Pinatar

A gentle stroll around the regional park between the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor

The Regional Park of Las Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar is a wetland area which includes salt flats, dunes and beaches between the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean, and is not only a visitor attraction but also an area of environmental importance due to the wildlife, particularly the birdlife (including flamingos).

Throughout the year it’s a thoroughly enjoyable place to visit for anyone who enjoys walking, cycling, birdwatching or just being outdoors. Most of the park consists of the salt flats themselves, which are divided into different flat pond areas by small earth ridges or stone walls, while a part is private property still used to produce salt on an industrial scale.

This tour on Sunday 9^th November is an easy walk and is designed to be attractive and educational for children, who can learn to identify various bird species (including the flamingos, which generally arrive at the end of the summer) and learn about their curious habits. They can also see some of the smallest inhabitants of the area – magnifying glasses will be needed for this!

Starting time is 11.00 at the entrance to the park from the “flamingo roundabout” (at the junction of Avenida de las Salinas and Avenida del Puerto) (click for map). The tour is expected to last around 2 hours, covering a distance of only 2 kilometres, and those taking part are advised to bring comfortable footwear, mosquito repellent and drinking water, as well as binoculars.
