October 11 An undemanding cultural and historical hike in the Bay of Portmán

A Roman villa, great views and a lovely walk in the fascinating countryside of the La Unión coastline

Arguably one of the most attractive of the hundreds of events being held all over the Region of Murcia over the long holiday weekend of 9^th to 12^th October is this 4-kilometre walk through the fascinating countryside of the Bay of Portmán in the municipality of La Unión.

Beginning at 9.45 at the car park of the Cenizas gun battery, the route organized by the Fundación Sierra Minera includes following the old Roman road along the coastline to the villa of El Paturro, where various vestiges of Roman rule and occupation are to be seen. These include coloured mosaic floor tiles, and on this occasion, a rare occurrence, those joining the walk will be able to go inside to see these artefacts for themselves.

The route then continues on the southern slopes of the Peña del Águilas, with excellent views out of the bay, joining the RM-314 on the way back to the starting point.

It is anticipated that, including stops, the walk will last between 3 and a half and 4 hours, and the cost is 9 euros for adults and 7 euros for children aged 7 to 14. It is not recommended for younger children.

Of course, adequate walking footwear is required, along with sun cream, drinking water and insect repellent. A snack may also be welcome!
