Playa del Cura, Torrevieja, a well-equipped urban beach
The Playa del Cura is a large swathe of sandy beach in the heart of Torrevieja
Much of the coastline in the municipality of Torrevieja consists of rocky outcrops and small sandy coves, but the Playa del Cura is an exception. Located in the heart of the town this is most definitely an urban beach, and boasts a wide swathe of sand and a myriad of shops, restaurants and services in the high-rise buildings which lie on the other side of the Avenida de los Marineros.
The sand occupies an area of over ten thousand square metres along its 375-metre length, and in summer it’s packed with sun-seekers who enjoy the novelty of a south-facing beach in an area where most of the coastline faces east.
Being right in the centre of the town, this emblematic Torrevieja beach has both its advantages and its disadvantages. On the plus side it is easy to reach and a couple of hours on the sand can be combined with visits to the shops, museums and other attractions of the resort, but on the downside, of course, traffic and parking can be problematic, even out of season. There is a bus stop (route A) on the main road just behind the beach for those travelling in from nearby areas.
Of course this beach is very busy in the summer, when the town is packed with holiday-makers who enjoy a full range of facilities. The sand is cleaned daily and the bins are emptied even out of season, and in the summer (mid-June to mid-September) there are pedal-boats and sunbeds for hire, the four lifeguard points and the first aid station are manned all day, and public toilets are operational. The water quality is monitored regularly in summer – it is only on rare occasions that it is not categorized as “excellent” in this part of the Mediterranean – and there are special toilets for the disabled. In addition, parking is reserved for those of limited mobility, and bicycle racks are provided for those solving the traffic problem by using pedal power.
Access to the beach is also relatively easy for those in wheelchairs, with wooden ramps installed, but there is no amphibious bathing chair. For any visitors wishing to explore the rest of Torrevieja there is a tourist information point located at the south-western end of the beach, on the promenade.
Every summer there is a beach “habaneras” festival at the Playa del Cura, when flocks of visitors gather for an outdoor dinner and an evening of Torrevieja’s traditional songs.
With all of these facilities in place it comes as no surprise to learn that the Playa del Cura flies the Blue Flag, and it is also recognized by the Qualitur organization as providing quality tourist services.
