Playa del Postiguet, el Postiguet beach in Alicante City
A lively city beach with restaurants, bars and children’s play areas
Playa del Postiguet is Alicante City's main municipal beach situated at the edge of the barrio de Ensanche Diputación and at the foot of the Castillo de Santa Barbara. The beach is popular among both locals and tourists due to its practical location being in close proximity to the Explanada de España and the Rambla de Méndez Núñez.
It is a long and sandy beach measuring 667 metres, by 40, with moderate waves and low currents. It is clean and well looked after with ample facilities including public toilets, foot showers, refreshment stands and ramps at every entrance to accomodate people with reduced mobility. The beach is also great for families as there are children’s play areas dotted about, fun paddle boating activities on offer and full lifeguard and emergency services are available during the summer.
All the way along the edge of playa del Postiguet are tall palm trees offering shade even in the heat of the summer, which back onto a wide attractive promenade running parallel to the beach home to a number of bars and restaurants as well as benches to sit and relax.
Visitors can also hire sun loungers and parasols for the duration of the day for around 8 euros (2016) and for a little extra an optional drinks service is provided for sunbathers to enjoy cold, fresh beverages without having to leave the sand.
The promenade is particularly popular at nighttime when residents tend to take an evening stroll or a dog walk and numerous joggers take advantage of the cooler temperatures to run all the way along the promenade and then back along the port.
Along the promenade there is a white alpha-shaped walkway that leads up and round towards a pleasant viewing point of the beach and the sea, and if visitors then take a left and walk up the road, bearing right, they will find a short cut to the old town, landing first at the plaza of the Basilica de Santa Maria and further down arriving at plaza Santisima Faz.
From the beach promenade visitors can also access the elevator that takes them up into the Castillo de Santa Barbara with a pedestrian crossing from the promenade going over the main road and leading directly to the entrance of the elevator tunnel.
At the far end of playa del Postiguet there is a ‘Xiringuito’ beach bar and burger place offering a lively atmosphere with music and friendly staff, with sunshades, small umbrellas and blankets available on request for customers who wish to consume their food and drink on the sand.
The best time to go to the Playa del Postiguet is before 13:00 when temperatures are cooler and there are less street sellers attempting to sell trinkets and tat on the sand. In peak season visitors are also advised to keep a close watch on their belongings when entering the sea to avoid potential pick pocketers during the busiest times of the day.
The Playa de Postiguet can be accessed by foot, car, or by bus via lines 2, 5, 21 or 22. Over 100 parking spaces are available (including disabled parking) in the carpark just parallel to the beach behind the main promenade.
