Popular and professional events in the sporting calendar of Águilas
The events which feature every year in the sporting calendar of Águilas include the following:
6th January: community cycle ride
The arrival of the Three Kings in Águilas coincides with this popular ride through the town, which ends in a prize draw for presents donated by local shops. There is no racing involved, it is just an event in which to take part, and is open to riders of all ages on all kinds of bicycle, tricycle, skateboards, roller skate or scooter!
Carnival regatta
Carnival is one of the biggest events of the year in Águilas, and this sailing regatta is held by the Club Náutico on the weekends either side of Carnival itself.
Amateur football leagues and tournaments
Approximately 20 teams take part in the local indoor 5-a-side football league from November to May, and in April a Football-7 tournament is held at the Polideportivo Municipal.
Sports gala
The “Gala del Deporte Aguileño” is held in September to congratulate local athletes and cluns on their successes during the previous season.
Municipal swimming pools
Winter activities in the heated indoor pool include swimming lessons and courses, sports training, open sessions for the public, and various other activities including tournaments and championships.
In summer the range of activities is similar, but the venue switches to the open-air pool, where three-week swimming courses are offered.
Beach games
A series of sporting activities are organized for children at the Playa de las Delicias during the summer, including water polo, beach volleyball, lifesaving training, etc.
Fun and competitive runs
Various are held throughout the year, including the Christmas “Subida al Castillo” cross country event, the regional “Carnavales de Águilas” duathlon the week before Carnival and the “Marqués de Águilas” triathlon.
