Spain weather forecast for August 6-9: Sun, heat and the risk of storms

Temperatures will remain well above average across much of Spain this weekend

Heat alerts on Friday August 7

Spain is in for another sweltering few days as the summer heat shows no sign of letting up. Sunshine will dominate across most of the country this coming weekend, with temperatures climbing into the high 30s across many inland areas and edging close to 40°C in the hottest spots.

Although much of the country will stay dry, forecasters are keeping an eye on the mountains in the north and east, where the heat could trigger a few afternoon thunderstorms later in the week.

Thursday August 6

The heat continues to build across much of Spain, with clear skies and long spells of sunshine from morning until evening. Inland Andalucía, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha and parts of the Ebro Valley are expected to be the hottest places, with highs of 38°C to 40°C.

Along the Mediterranean coast, including Alicante, Murcia and Málaga, temperatures should range between 31°C and 35°C. A light sea breeze will make conditions feel a little more comfortable near the coast, although it will still be a very warm day. Northern Spain will be noticeably cooler, with temperatures mostly in the mid to high 20s.

Friday August 7

Very little changes as the hot weather continues. Most of Spain will enjoy another day of uninterrupted sunshine, with temperatures remaining well above average for early August.

The hottest inland areas are again expected to approach 40°C, while the Mediterranean coast should stay in the low to mid-30s. During the afternoon, cloud could bubble up over the Pyrenees and other mountainous areas in the north, bringing the chance of a few isolated thunderstorms.

Saturday August 8

Saturday looks set to be another classic summer day for much of the country. Beach resorts along the Mediterranean and the Balearic Islands can expect plenty of sunshine and warm sea temperatures, making it ideal weather for anyone heading to the coast.

Further inland, the intense heat will continue, particularly across southern and central Spain. The risk of scattered afternoon storms increases slightly across northern and north-eastern mountain areas, although most places will stay dry.

Sunday August 9

The weekend rounds off much as it began, with widespread sunshine and very warm conditions across the country. Inland temperatures are once again expected to reach the upper 30s, with a few places touching 40°C during the afternoon.

Coastal areas should remain a few degrees cooler thanks to onshore breezes, although nights will stay warm and humid in many Mediterranean resorts. Any isolated thunderstorms in the north are expected to fade by evening, leaving most of Spain to end the weekend under clear skies.

Looking ahead to next week, there's little sign of any major change. The hot weather is expected to continue across much of Spain, with temperatures remaining above average and sunshine dominating the forecast.
