Spain weather forecast July 13-16: Scorching heat takes hold
Widespread high temperature alerts are in place across Spain this week

Weather alerts across Spain on Wednesday July 15
A weather system parked off the coast of Galicia is set to dominate Spain's forecast for the next few days, bringing rain to the north while temperatures climb steeply elsewhere. It'll stay more or less in place until Wednesday before drifting north and away from the country by Thursday.
Alongside the heat, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has also flagged a serious wildfire risk across much of the mainland this week following the devastation in Almería, so it's worth keeping an eye on local alerts if you're in one of the affected areas.
Monday July 13

Light rain will settle over Galicia and Asturias, with the odd thunderstorm possible too. Showers are also expected in the Basque Country, Navarra, La Rioja and Aragon, so it won't be a completely dry start to the week up north.
Further south and east, though, it's a different story. Cities including Granada, Cuenca, Murcia, Albacete and Málaga could all see highs of 37°C to 40°C. Madrid, Valladolid and Valencia will be more comfortable by comparison, sitting around 30°C, while Zaragoza and much of the Aragonese and Catalan Pyrenees will be on alert for the heat.
Catalonia will also see its third heatwave of the year get underway on Monday, with Meteocat forecasting temperatures of 38°C to 39°C in Lleida and Girona and warm, tropical nights that will make it hard to cool off even after dark. It's set to last at least until Wednesday.
The fire risk will be especially high on Monday in northern Navarra, Aragon and Catalonia, along with parts of Andalucia. Orange alerts will also be in place across inland areas of Castilla y León, particularly in the south and east, plus parts of La Rioja, Castilla-La Mancha, northern Madrid and northern Valencia.
Tuesday July 14

Rain will return to Galicia and Asturias, and it can't be ruled out elsewhere along the Cantabrian coast or in parts of the Pyrenees, although it'll be lighter in those areas. The heat, meanwhile, will push even higher. Madrid could reach 36°C, with Murcia and Zaragoza climbing to 39°C and Lleida topping the lot at 40°C.
The wildfire risk will actually increase again on Tuesday, spreading more widely across the country. Aragon, Catalonia, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Navarra and La Rioja will all be affected, along with inland parts of the Region of Murcia and Andalucia.
Wednesday July 15

Rain and thunderstorms will move in during the afternoon across Galicia, Asturias and Cantabria, with more scattered showers possible in northern Castilla y León and the Pyrenees. There's also a chance of showers over the mountain ranges in the southeast of the country. The weather system responsible for this week's unsettled conditions is expected to start losing strength, with forecasters watching closely to see how it develops.
Thursday July 16

The system should finally clear away to the north on Thursday, taking the worst of the unsettled weather with it. It's also the day Catalonia's heatwave is expected to come to an end, which should bring some relief after several days of high temperatures and tropical nights.
Even so, daytime temperatures will still climb well past 35°C in most of east and southern Spain.
