Spain weekly weather forecast September 28-October 1: Storms, rain and a proper autumnal reset

Cold air sweeping in from the Atlantic brings widespread thunderstorms, heavy rain and a significant drop in temperatures across much of the country

Last week Spain was still clinging to summer, with parts of the south pushing close to 40°C even as astronomical autumn arrived. This week the break is real. Cold air aloft and an advancing Atlantic front bring unsettled conditions to large parts of the country from Monday onwards, with the north and northeast bearing the brunt and temperatures dropping sharply across the board.

Monday September 28

A broadly unsettled start to the week across most of the Iberian Peninsula. Cloudy skies with abundant mid-level cloud bring showers and thunderstorms that could be locally heavy almost anywhere, with the chance of isolated hail in places. Light rain also affects the Mediterranean coast, the Balearic Islands and the Strait of Gibraltar. Temperatures fall across the country, significantly so in the southern interior where the drop in maximums will be most noticeable. Winds are moderate easterly along the Mediterranean coast and around the Strait, and moderate southerly inland and on the Cantabrian coast. The Canary Islands stay largely calm.

Tuesday September 29

A tale of two halves. The morning brings the risk of strong to very strong thunderstorms in the northeast, particularly along the Catalan coast, with potentially torrential rain and large hail. By the afternoon, the focus shifts west as an Atlantic front pushes in, bringing heavy and persistent rain to Galicia and the northern mountains, with very strong gusts possible. Elsewhere across the peninsula it starts clearer but clouds over through the day. Temperatures rise slightly in the far south and the Cantabrian region, while falling in Galicia and the northeast. Winds are moderate southerly inland, strengthening significantly as the front arrives in the northwest.

Wednesday September 30

The Atlantic front pushes further across the peninsula, bringing very cloudy skies and rain to the northwest, with significant accumulations possible in the eastern Cantabrian Mountains. The rest of the country sees plenty of cloud too, with isolated showers possible in the southeast and the Balearic Islands, some accompanied by thunderstorms in the northeast. Mist and fog patches are likely around the Strait of Gibraltar and in elevated areas of the north. Temperatures ease in the northwest and hold broadly steady elsewhere. Moderate southeasterly winds along the Mediterranean coast and moderate southerly winds inland, with strong gusts possible in the Cantabrian Mountains.

Thursday October 1

October opens with the front still lingering in the north, where rain continues, shifting from the Cantabrian coast in the morning to the northeast by the afternoon. The rest of the peninsula sees high cloud and the chance of isolated showers, with thunderstorms possible in the eastern interior during the afternoon. Fog patches persist around the Strait and in northern upland areas. Temperatures change little across most of the country, with the main falls confined to the far north. Winds are moderate from the north and northwest on the Atlantic coasts and easterly on the Mediterranean side, with light and variable conditions in the Alboran Sea.

The message this week is clear: autumn has arrived. After months of relentless heat, Spain finally gets the reset it's been waiting for, even if the north takes the wilder end of that bargain.
