Spain's sleepless summer: Record-breaking tropical nights hit the country
There’s no rest for the wicked as Spain has already recorded 33 nights with temperatures above 20ºC

While we’ve come to expect sweltering days in Spain at the height of summer, there’s no escaping the fact that high temperatures at night make sleep difficult and uncomfortable at best, and often quite impossible.
After a June that has gone down in history as the warmest on record in Spain, the first week of July kicked off with another milestone: tropical nights, where the thermometers don’t dip below 20ºC, have broken a record across the country. Never before has such a high number been recorded between June 1 and July 7.
So far this summer, 33 of these sticky nights have been recorded, which outstrips the previous joint title holders, 2022 and 2003 (30).
Up north, Zaragoza Airport’s weather station has data dating back as far as 1941, but never before has it seen 25 tropical nights in the first 37 days of summer.
Southern Spain, specifically Jaén, has also set a new record for tropical nights, registering 26 so far. The previous top stretch of 25 nights was in 2017.
In the Tortosa resort in Tarragona, with 105 years of available records, 2025 marked several milestones.
"Not only are we witnessing a record number of tropical nights at the start of summer, with more than 25, surpassing the previous record (2022) by more than 7%. This resort has also broken its record for the highest minimum temperature for the month of July," a meteorologist explained.
But there is a little relief on the horizon. A stormy front will sweep in from the Atlantic as we approach the weekend, resulting in not only widespread rain, but a noticeable drop in both day and night-time temperatures.
