Spanish bus drivers suspend strikes next week due to DANA
The transport strike scheduled in Valencia for Monday November 11 has been temporarily called off
As communities affected by the recent floods continue the complicated clean-up operation, the public transport strike scheduled for Monday November 11 has been temporarily suspended by the UGT and CC.OO unions.
The nationwide industrial action, which began on Monday October 28, is expected to impact intercity and city buses, school transport and other passenger services.
This decision was made due to the complicated consequences of the DANA on mobility in the province of Valencia.
According to the CC.OO. statement, "road passenger transport services by bus and self-propelled cranes are essential at this time." The Federation of Services, Mobility and Consumption of UGT echoed this sentiment, stating that "right now, citizens and the State need to have all possible resources for mobility and logistics. For this reason, it would be irresponsible to maintain a strike in the current context."
The original reason for the strike was the unions' demand for recognition of early retirement for professional drivers. However, in light of the current situation, the unions have decided to put their demands on hold.
The UGT concluded its statement by expressing its appreciation "to all the workers, the State Security Forces and Corps, the emergency services, the health workers, the Army, as well as the volunteers who are in the affected areas making titanic efforts to improve the situation and try to recover, as far as possible, social normality."
Despite the suspension of the industrial action, the province of Valencia still has a long way to go in terms of recovering normality in transport. Traffic restrictions have just been extended for another 48 hours to give priority to the heavy machinery needed by the aid and clean-up teams.
One of the biggest projects in the days ahead will be the removal of waste and debris, which will be carried out in two phases: a daytime phase for collecting waste and household goods in storage areas, and a nighttime phase for transporting waste to storage areas and quarries.
The municipalities that will be affected by the traffic restrictions include Aldaia, Alaquàs, Picanya, Sedaví, Paiporta, Benetússer, Alfafar, Massanassa, Catarroja, Albal and Beniparrell.
