Swedish Princess dies at her home in Mallorca
The princess, who was known for her passion for golf, passed away at her home in Santa Ponsa
Aged 87, Princess Birgitta of Sweden, sister of King Carl XVI Gustaf, died at her home in Santa Ponsa in Spain yesterday, Wednesday December 4.
The news was announced by the Swedish Royal Family, as King Carl XVI Gustaf stated, “My sister was a vibrant and forthright person who will be greatly missed by me and my family.”
The princess had owned a house on the island of Mallorca for many years and was a member of the Santa Ponsa Golf Club and the Santa Ponsa Country Club. The princess was also often seen attending the Santa Lucia celebrations at Palma Cathedral, and was a strong supporter of the Swedish community in Mallorca.
The princess was known for her keen interest and passion for golf. She was the host of the annual Princess Birgitta Golf Tournament on the island of Mallorca and had been for many years.
The princess was the second daughter of the Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden and Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. She was sister to the now king of Sweden and was a member of the royal family. She held the title of the Royal Highness as Princess of Sweden.
The princess grew up at Haga Palace in Stockholm alongside her sisters, Margaretha, Désirée, and Christina. Among her siblings, she is the only one to have married a prince, which allowed her to retain her royal titles and status.
Princess Birgitta married Prince Johann Georg of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen in 1961, becoming Princess of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen by marriage. The couple had three children: Carl Christian (born 1962), Désirée Margareta (born 1963), and Hubertus Gustav (born 1966). Though they separated in 1990, they remained married until Johann Georg’s death in 2016.
