Tax returns in Spain: Deadline for the 2025 IRPF tax campaign is coming up fast

The 2025 Renta campaign is well underway in Spain, with more than 7.6 million taxpayers having already filed their declarations for income earned in 2024. According to Spain’s Tax Agency, the Hacienda, over 4.34 million people have already received their tax rebate in their account, amounting to a total of €3.040 billion given back to Spain’s taxpayers!

Who is required to file an income tax return in Spain?

Not everyone is obliged to submit a tax return in Spain, but it’s crucial to understand the thresholds:

If your income comes exclusively from employment and is €22,000 or less per year, you are generally not required to file
This threshold is lowered to €15,876 per year if you’ve received income from more than one payer (with certain exceptions), if your employer is not obliged to withhold tax, or if the income is subject to a fixed withholding rate

You are also exempt from filing if your earnings (either instead of or in addition to employment income) consist of:

Dividends, interest and capital gains (all subject to withholding tax) up to a joint limit of €1,600
Imputed real estate income, certain non-withheld capital income from Treasury bills, or public subsidies for social housing, provided the total doesn’t exceed €1,000

In addition, if your total income from work, capital, and economic activities, plus capital gains from things like subsidies or prizes, is no more than €1,000, and your capital losses are under €500, you are not required to file.
