Trucker heading to UK stopped on A-7 in Murcia for driving under the influence of cocaine

The articulated lorry driver posed a serious risk to other road users as he was weaving across lanes on the A-7 motorway

The Guardia Civil has intercepted a 50-year-old truck driver who tested positive for cocaine after being reported by several motorists for erratic and dangerous driving on the A-7 motorway near Alhama de Murcia.

The incident occurred last Saturday afternoon, May 17, when the Guardia Civil’s Traffic Headquarters (COTA) received multiple calls from concerned drivers travelling on the dual carriageway. Callers reported that a heavy goods vehicle was zigzagging across lanes, veering into the hard shoulder and straying into the fast lane, posing a high risk to himself and to other road users.

Responding quickly to the warnings, several patrols from the Guardia Civil Traffic Group were deployed to the area. With the help of public reports and coordinated efforts on the ground, officers managed to locate and intercept the 40-tonne articulated lorry. They confirmed that the vehicle was engaged in a series of highly dangerous manoeuvres, including repeatedly crossing both lanes of the motorway and driving along the hard shoulder in a reckless manner.

After stopping the vehicle, officers conducted roadside tests, during which the driver gave a positive result for cocaine use. A sample has been sent to a toxicology laboratory for definitive confirmation.

The driver, who had been en route from El Ejido in Almería to the United Kingdom, has been formally investigated and charged with two offences against road safety, driving under the influence of drugs and reckless driving.
