Two children killed in devastating Benalmádena apartment fire
Málaga firefighters rescued several residents, but two children aged 10 and 15 could not be saved
Two children aged 10 and 15 have died after a devastating fire swept through an apartment building in Benalmádena, Málaga, during the early hours of Thursday morning, July 30.
Emergency services were called to Calle Ónix in the Arroyo de la Miel area at around 5.40am after several people reported a fire in a flat within the four-storey building.
According to the 112 Andalucía emergency service, the blaze quickly spread from the apartment where it started to four neighbouring homes, forcing the evacuation of residents from two floors of the building.
Fire crews from Benalmádena, Mijas and Fuengirola, along with National Police, Local Police and medical teams, rushed to the scene. Benalmádena Town Hall said firefighters arrived to find the fire already well developed.
Rescue teams managed to bring several people to safety, but the two children sadly lost their lives. Their mother was rescued from the building and taken to hospital in a serious condition, where she remains under medical care.
One firefighter was injured during the operation and several firefighters and police officers were treated for smoke inhalation.
Benalmádena Town Hall expressed its deep sorrow following the tragedy, while Mayor Juan Antonio Lara offered his condolences to the children's family, friends and neighbours.
In a message shared on social media, the mayor described the incident as "a brutal tragedy" that had left the town heartbroken. He also thanked the emergency services who risked their own safety during the rescue operation and wished the injured responders a speedy recovery.
The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed and an investigation is expected to establish how the blaze started.
