Two Lithuanians arrested in Torrevieja for stealing high-end car in the UK
One of the men, wanted on a European Arrest Warrant, tried to flee by jumping a barrier at the Torrevieja Guardia Civil station
Two Lithuanian men have been arrested in Torrevieja after Guardia Civil officers spotted them driving a luxury vehicle worth more than €80,000 that had been stolen in the United Kingdom.
The investigation began on March 5 when officers on routine patrol noticed a high-end car with UK plates being driven by two men. The vehicle was missing the mandatory country of origin sticker, which prompted a closer inspection. That inspection revealed that the vehicle identification number had been tampered with in several places, and further checks confirmed that the car had been stolen in the UK last year.
The passenger also raised suspicions when he presented a passport whose photograph didn't appear to match his actual identity. Officers subsequently discovered he had a criminal record for drug trafficking and organised crime and was subject to a European Arrest Warrant.
Both men, aged 36 and 32, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of document forgery and handling stolen property and taken to the Guardia Civil station in Torrevieja.
It was there that the situation took an unexpected turn, as when the door of the patrol car was opened, the passenger made a run for it, jumping over the station's access barrier. He broke the barrier in the process and injured himself, but was quickly recaptured by officers and faced an additional charge of property damage as a result.
Both men were subsequently released by the judicial authority with precautionary measures in place pending trial.
