VIDEO: Snow on the roads as Storm Kristin brings fresh chaos to Spain

Weather alerts remain in place nationwide as travel disruption continues

Hot on the heels of Joseph, Storm Kristin has brought widespread disruption to Spain with heavy rain, snowfall and very strong winds to much of the country. Weather warnings are in force across almost all regions, with this Wednesday expected to be the most difficult day before conditions begin to ease.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued alerts that will remain active until at least Thursday January 29. All autonomous communities are affected, with the exception of Navarra. Authorities are warning residents to take extra care and avoid unnecessary travel where possible.

The most serious alert is in Almería, where a red warning has been declared due to an extraordinary risk from wind gusts of up to 130kmh. Similar red alerts have been issued in parts of Extremadura, including the Meseta Cacereña, Villuercas and Montánchez areas, where emergency services are also on high alert for dangerous winds.

Several other regions are under orange warnings, meaning a significant risk. These include the Balearic Islands, the Region of Murcia, the Valencian Community and the city of Ceuta, mainly due to strong winds and rough seas.

Castilla y León is on orange alert for snowfall and wind, while Castilla-La Mancha and Extremadura are facing orange warnings for wind and yellow alerts for rain and snow. Galicia is also on orange alert for high waves and yellow for snow, and the southern exclave of Melilla is on yellow alert due to coastal conditions.

Snowfall is already causing problems in several inland areas. Heavy snow has been reported in the city of Ávila, with further snowfall expected at low altitudes in Castilla y León, Madrid and Extremadura. Drivers are being urged to pay close attention to road conditions.

According to the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT), around 90 roads were affected early on Wednesday. Of these, 67 were impacted by snow or ice, while another 23 secondary roads were blocked or affected by flooding.

In the autonomous Community of Madrid, emergency services say the morning has been particularly challenging. The 112 Emergency services hotline has received many calls from drivers reporting vehicles and lorries stuck in the snow, especially in the north and west of the region.

Several vehicles have been trapped on the A-6 motorway while there were long tailbacks on the M-40. Authorities have reminded drivers that snow chains or winter tyres are compulsory on all mountain passes in the Community of Madrid.

Although Storm Kristin is expected to pass quickly, officials warn that its impact could be intense, with wind gusts in some areas potentially reaching up to 150kmh. Residents are being advised to stay at home where possible, follow official guidance and keep up to date with weather and travel information.
