What happens when local elderly care home residents plant trees in their neighbourhood
Caser Residencial Santo Ángel has joined a city-wide initiative that is blending environmental action with community spirit
A few weeks ago, residents of the elderly care and nursing home Caser Residencial Santo Ángel stepped outside their usual routine to take part in something simple yet meaningful: planting trees in their local neighbourhood.
The activity formed part of Murcia City Council’s Plan Foresta, an ambitious community initiative designed to increase green spaces across the municipality while encouraging environmental awareness among residents of all ages. From schools and sports clubs to senior groups and local associations, the project is bringing together a wide cross-section of society with a shared goal of doubling Murcia’s forest cover.
Since its launch, Plan Foresta has already seen more than 2,500 planting sessions, resulting in 36,594 trees of 119 different species being planted across the municipality’s districts and neighbourhoods. Each of these trees is expected to absorb around 21.77 kilograms of CO2 per year, contributing in a practical way to improving air quality and environmental sustainability.
For the residents of Caser Residencial Santo Ángel, the experience was about more than just planting trees. It offered a chance to engage with the local community, spend time outdoors and take part in an initiative with a clear, positive impact. Small actions, as the project highlights, can indeed make a big difference.
Demand for residential care in Murcia continues to grow, where the. In the past five years, the number of private care homes in the municipality has increased significantly, rising from nine to 15, driven by an ageing population and changing social dynamics that make home-based care more difficult for many families.
Despite this growth, there remains a notable shortfall in available places for those over 65 in the Region of Murcia, underlining the importance of both expanding capacity and enhancing the role that care homes play within their communities.
And it’s here where Caser Residencial Santo Ángel stands out: not only for the services it provides, but also for its active role in the local life of the community. By participating in initiatives like Plan Foresta, as well as school reading days and interactions with other local groups, the centre reinforces its commitment to social wellbeing, environmental responsibility and meaningful community integration.
That also includes – thanks to the centre’s International Unit – bringing Murcia’s expat community into the fold, too, making them feel part of the daily fabric and life of the neighbourhood, and not just an afterthought.
