When a trip to Benidorm is better than school: UK mum risks fine for 'educational' off-season family holiday

Single mother Leanne Bray faces fines and penalties for taking her five children to Alicante during the off-season

Leanne Bray has caused controversy by taking her five children out of school to go to Benidorm on holiday. She justified her decision by claiming that her children, some of whom have special needs, benefit more from family experiences than school.

Bray stated that she prefers to use family time to attend to her children’s emotional needs, especially given their autism and ADHD diagnoses.

She states, “My children also learn while they are here, they meet people from different cultures, they learn a new language and we go on day trips… It’s all very educational. Children learn in different ways, mine learn more like this than sitting in a classroom.”

Leanne Bray also argues that trips taken out of school holidays are cheaper.

Yet, British law requires children to attend school unless specifically authorised not to do so.

Unexcused absences can result in fines of up to £2,500 (almost €3,000 at current exchange rates) per parent. More serious legal action, such as court orders and prison sentences, can ensue in more extreme cases.

Regardless of the law, this case has prompted much debate between those who defend education and those who believe that families should have greater flexibility.

Many parents express frustration at the high costs of holidays during non-school periods.

While others believe that sanctions are correct, as they ensure school attendance and fairness for all.
