Winter is coming: Spain weather forecast December 2-5
Temperatures are set to plummet across Spain later this week
Average temperatures expected on Wednesday December 4
Much of Spain woke up to a frosty morning on Monday December 2 after an unseasonably mild and balmy weekend that saw the beaches in the south of the country packed to the rafters with bathers soaking up what could well be the last of the sun. Because according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), winter is just around the corner.
The beginning of the week will be marked by instability thanks to a new front entering through northern Spain. This will lead to cloudiness and showers that will move from west to east as the days go by and there are even signs of a dreaded DANA descending on the Canary Islands.
However, meteorologists' attention is focused on the upcoming weekend, when an episode of Arctic cold could mark a radical temperature change.
Monday December 2
The passage of the front on Monday will mostly impact the northern half of the country, with light showers forecast across the board and plenty of snow in the Pyrenees. The rain will be heaviest in Cantabria but it could spread in a weaker way to points of the south, including western Andalucía and the Balearic Islands.
Daytime temperatures will tend to fall across the country, and Monday night will be much cooler than previous days in the Canary Islands and along the west coasts.
A yellow alert for dangerous sea conditions has been activated in Catalonia from 8pm.
Tuesday December 3
Catalonia remains on alert for rough seas and heavy rain all day but in general, the worst of the weather on Tuesday should be confined to northern Spain.
Just like Monday though, meteorologists aren’t ruling out that some of the rain could extend further south in the form of more scattered showers.
The Canary Islands will remain under the influence of a DANA will could lead to some heavy rainfall in the west.
Daytime temperatures will continue to plummet but large parts of the south, including Alicante and Murcia, will see the mercury inch past the 20-degree-mark.
Wednesday December 4
The weather will settle down nicely on Wednesday and most of the country and the Balearic Islands can look forward to a bright day with intervals of high clouds.
However, the extreme north of the country will continue to be under the influence of Atlantic circulation, with the remains of fronts leaving abundant cloud cover in the northern third and rain in Galicia, Cantabria and the Pyrenees.
Temperatures won’t change all that much, but thermometers will take another dip in much of southern Spain.
The Balearic Islands join Catalonia on weather alert for dangerous maritime conditions.
Thursday December 5
Just like Wednesday, the north of Spain will be battered by heavy rain which will likely spread to the east of the Balearic Islands. Elsewhere, the day should be dry but the skies will be mostly cloudy or overcast.
Daytime temperatures will fall again in the southeast of Spain and in the Balearic Islands.
