Believe it or not, sunny Spain offers a diverse range of snowy destinations to explore
As the winter season approaches, many of us can't help but feel a thrill of excitement at the prospect of experiencing the magic of snow. And while Spain may not be the first country that comes to mind when thinking of snowy landscapes, it has its own share of breathtaking winter wonderlands just waiting to be explored.
From the rugged mountains of the north to the sun-kissed south, Spain offers a diverse range of snowy destinations that are sure to delight both nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.
So pack your warmest clothes, grab your camera and get ready to discover the best places to see snow in Spain this winter.
Sierra de Gredos, Ávila
Located in the province of Ávila, the Sierra de Gredos mountain range is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking snow in Spain.
This stunning natural park offers some of the most spectacular winter landscapes in the country, with its snow-capped peaks, frozen lakes and picturesque villages.
Hike through the snow-covered trails of Navarredonda de Gredos and Hoyos del Espino, or take on the challenge of tackling Almanzor, the highest peak in the Sierra de Gredos at 2,591 metres.
Valle de Arán, Lleida
Valle de Arán or the Aran Valley in Catalonia is a winter sports enthusiast's dream come true. With its world-class ski resorts like Baqueira, via ferrata routes and snowshoeing trails, there's something for every level of experience and interest.
After a day on the slopes, relax and unwind at one of the many thermal spas and hot springs in the area, such as the Termas de la Baronia in Les.
Don't forget to try the local specialty, 'olla aranesa,' a hearty stew that's sure to warm your belly and your spirits.
Comarca del Sobrarbe, Huesca
Located in the community of Aragón, the Sobrarbe region is a nature lover's paradise. With its stunning valleys, photogenic peaks and picturesque villages, it's a must-visit destination for anyone seeking snow in Spain.
Take a hike through the snow-covered trails of Ordesa and Pineta, or explore the medieval village of Aínsa, which is even more breathtaking when covered in snow.
Sierra de las Nieves, Malaga
Who says you can't find snow in the south of Spain? The Sierra de las Nieves natural park in Málaga is a hidden gem that's sure to surprise even the most seasoned travellers.
This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is stunning year-round, but it's especially magical when blanketed in snow.
Explore the towns of Yunquera and Tolox, and don't miss the opportunity to visit Ronda, one of Spain's most unique and picturesque towns.
Rascafría, Madrid
Just a short bus ride or drive from Madrid, Rascafría is the perfect destination for a family snow day. This charming town in the Madrid region offers peaceful and uncrowded winter trails, a frozen waterfall and a picturesque village to explore.
Take a short hike to the Cascada del Purgatorio waterfall and enjoy the scenic views and delicious local cuisine.
Often described as a mini-Switzerland, Rascafría will captivate even the most seasoned travellers with its wealth of history, stunning architecture and delicious local specialties.
Burgos
Located at an impressive altitude of almost 900 metres, Burgos proudly claims the title of the city that sees the most snow in Spain. While it's not a hard and fast rule, the city typically experiences snowfall three to four times a month between December and March, with January being the snowiest month.
And we're not talking just a light dusting - Burgos has seen some significant snowfalls in the past, including a notable 70-centimete blanket of snow in certain parts of the city centre back in 2004.
Just imagine strolling through the streets, snowshoes or skis in hand, to pick up a fresh loaf of bread from the local bakery!
