Woman killed by falling palm tree during Storm Joseph in Torremolinos
Strong winds linked to the storm caused widespread damage across Málaga province
A woman has died after being hit by a palm tree that fell during strong winds in Torremolinos, on the Costa del Sol. The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon, January 27, as Storm Joseph swept through the area, as confirmed by Torremolinos Town Hall.
Emergency services received several calls at around 1.40pm reporting that a palm tree had collapsed on Avenida Palma de Mallorca. The 112 emergency number alerted firefighters, Local Police and health services, who rushed to the scene.
Despite efforts to revive the woman, emergency crews were unable to save her and her death was confirmed at the scene.
Torremolinos Town Hall has expressed its deepest condolences to the woman’s family and loved ones.
Storm Joseph has caused disruption across all of Málaga province and much of the rest of Andalucía and Spain. According to Emergencias 112 Andalucía, almost 100 emergency incidents were recorded on Tuesday, most of them linked to the driving winds.
Many of the callouts involved fallen branches and trees, as well as loose or hanging cables. Problems were reported in a number of areas, including Mijas, Fuengirola, Pizarra, Rincón de la Victoria, Alhaurín de la Torre, Málaga city, Marbella, Ronda and Benalmádena.
Authorities have reminded residents to take extra care during periods of severe weather, particularly in areas with trees or unstable structures.
