7 steps to a brighter future with solar power in Spain
Enjoy expertise in custom solar solutions across Spain from Ecocorp Solar
Spain is embracing a bright future with its rapidly growing solar energy sector, offering enticing incentives for solar panels used in self-consumption installations. This bold move is part of the country's commitment to fostering renewable energy sources and empowering consumers to take control of their energy needs.
In just five short years, from 2019 to 2023, solar energy adoption in Spain has skyrocketed. What was once a niche market has now become a mainstream phenomenon, with solar panels popping up on rooftops across the country.
The combined installed capacity for industrial and domestic self-consumption in 2023 ranged from 1,706 megawatts to 1,943 megawatts, reflecting a slight dip compared to the previous year's higher figures.
Despite this minor setback, Spain's self-consumption revolution continues to forge ahead. The numbers speak for themselves: in 2023 alone, nearly eight times more power was installed than in 2018. This remarkable growth has propelled the country's cumulative solar capacity to over 7,100 megawatts, rivalling the combined output of its nuclear reactors.
7 steps to a brighter future
UNEF, a leading renewable energy association in Spain, has proposed seven essential measures to ensure the continued growth and success of the self-consumption sector:
- Extend the exemption from requesting access capacity to all facilities that inject less than 15kW into the grid, regardless of the installed capacity. This will allow a large part of the energy currently lost in “self-consumption without surplus” facilities to be introduced into the grid.
- Extend the number of facilities eligible for simplified compensation to all facilities with access capacity of up to 450kW. This will allow all industrial self-consumers with a 3.0TD tariff to benefit from surplus compensation.
- Increase the current power from 100kW to 450kW without a security deposit. So that all industrial self-consumers with a 3.0TD tariff, who install a power of a magnitude equal to your maximum consumption, can benefit from this simplified form.
- Increase the distance at which surpluses can be shared by 5,000 metres, and extend its application to all photovoltaic installations, not just rooftop installations.
- Promote the development of the Self-Consumption Manager figure for the deployment of Collective Self-Consumption.
- Develop the regulatory framework for the Capacity for Access to a flexible electricity generation and consumption network, through Access Specifications, to facilitate the connection of facilities with manageable generation and consumption.
- Apply 0% VAT to panels and inverters dedicated to self-consumption, as they do in the likes of Germany and the UK.
Spain's embrace of solar energy is not only reducing the country's reliance on traditional power sources but also empowering individuals and businesses to take control of their energy needs.
With these strategic measures in place, the future looks bright for a sustainable and resilient energy landscape in Spain.
