Alicante becomes the 10th most populated city in Spain

Alicante has become the 10th most populated city in Spain with 348,901 inhabitants as of January 1 2023, surpassing Bilbao, which is now relegated to 11th place.

According to updated data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), the number of people registered in Alicante city has leapt by more than 10,000 in 12 months, from 338,577 residents last year.

The city's population is now more than 8,000 higher than Bilbao which, according to data from the Basque Institute of Statistics (Eustat) has 340,455 registered residents. The list is topped by Madrid with almost 3.3 million followed by Barcelona (1.7 million):

In the opinion of Alicante Mayor, Luis Barcala, the "population growth shows that the city is on the rise" with "constant progress and an enormous capacity to attract people, goods and services".

"We are going to continue working along the same lines of physical transformation and improving the productive fabric of Alicante to reinforce this attraction and consolidate our position in the top 10 among the main Spanish cities," he added.

The city has steadily increased its census population since 2017, when there were 329,988 official inhabitants, rising to 331,577 in 2018, 334,887 in 2019, 337,482 (2020), 337,302 (2021) and 338,577 (2022), of which 175,029 were women and 163,548 men.

In stark contrast, Bilbao has experienced a very different trend and the figure for 2022 is the lowest recorded in the last five years.
