Alicante train station set for major transformation under Central Park project

The project aims to turn Alicante into a major Mediterranean rail hub with expanded tracks and upgraded station

A major transformation is being planned for Alicante’s train station as part of the exciting new Central Park project, a long-term redevelopment scheme that aims to reshape large parts of the city around housing, accessibility and transport.

At the centre of the plans is a complete rethink of the current station site, which would see the historic terminal restored to its original architectural style while also being integrated with a brand new modern building designed for high-speed rail passengers.

Spain’s Transport Minister Óscar Puente explained that the idea is to create a single connected station, bringing the old and new structures together so they function as one unified transport hub. The new high-speed terminal is expected to be built in the area currently used as a taxi rank, although parts of the wider site, including the existing post office building, are still under review.

Minister Puente described the plan as a “modern building that can integrate with the historic building,” with both elements connected as a single operational station.

Alongside the architectural changes, the railway infrastructure itself is also being heavily upgraded. The works, which began last year, include a €20.2 million investment and are expected to be completed in the first half of 2027.

Once finished, Alicante station will have 14 tracks in total, including ten for high-speed services and four for regional trains. The upgrades involve adding three new standard gauge tracks and converting three existing Iberian gauge lines to standard gauge, significantly increasing capacity.

According to Puente, the wider goal is to turn Alicante into one of the most important rail hubs in the Mediterranean, describing the project as the biggest railway transformation the city has ever seen.
