Benidorm walks the talk as one of Spain's most pedestrian‑friendly towns
New data shows three in four journeys are on foot and noise levels are falling fast
Benidorm is one of Spain’s most walkable cities, with new data showing that most everyday trips are now made on foot.A study presented to the Mobility Council, as part of the review of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, reveals that 75% of journeys within the municipality are done walking, while private cars account for just 15% and buses 5%. Other modes, such as motorcycles (2.2%), trains (1.7%), bicycles (1.1%), taxis (0.8%) and scooters or personal mobility vehicles (0.2%), make up only a small share.
For Jesús Alba, director of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, these figures confirm “the commitment to sustainable modes of transport.” The Councillor for Mobility, Francis Muñoz, also welcomed the results, saying they show that the work carried out in recent years places Benidorm “on the right track.”
The ongoing review of the plan will look in detail at all forms of transport, with special attention to pedestrians, public transport and bicycles, while still taking into account road safety, private vehicles and parking. This technical work will be backed up by a participatory process that includes citizen surveys, interviews and data analysis, so that future mobility policies reflect the real needs of residents.
Noise is another area where the town appears to be improving. The latest progress report on the Municipal Acoustic Plan shows that in 2019, 5% of the population was exposed to high noise levels, but by 2025 that figure is expected to fall to just 0.1%.
At present, 87% of people experience low noise levels during the day, and this extends to practically the whole population at night. According to the monitoring, this means there are now virtually no areas with serious night‑time noise pollution, something the study links both to the location of major roads such as the AP‑7 and N‑332 away from the urban centre, and to the sustainable mobility policies introduced in recent years.
During the latest Mobility Council meeting, the Ayuntamiento also reviewed other ongoing projects, including new park‑and‑ride facilities, infrastructure upgrades and further sustainability measures.
Together, these moves are intended to reinforce a model in which most daily journeys in Benidorm can continue to be made on foot, in quieter streets and with more options for those who choose not to rely on the car.
