British man dies after violent fight outside Las Verónicas nightclubs in Tenerife

A holidaymaker was killed in Playa de las Américas in the early hours of Thursday morning

A 37-year-old British man has died after a violent fight broke out in the popular nightlife area of Las Verónicas in Playa de las Américas, southern Tenerife, in the early hours of Thursday morning.

According to police sources, the incident happened around 1.30am near the Las Verónicas shopping centre. The Nacional Police and emergency services were called to a disturbance and arrived at the scene, but despite advanced resuscitation efforts, the victim could not be saved and was pronounced dead there.

Reviews from Televisión Canaria say the incident involved two British nationals: the victim and a 23-year-old man who has been arrested as the suspected attacker. Security staff employed by the nightclubs intervened during the fight, restrained the alleged aggressor and held him until officers from the Policía Nacional arrived at around 1am.

Some reports say that, during the argument, one of those involved threw a glass at the other, after which the suspected attacker punched the victim. The blow knocked the 37-year-old unconscious, and paramedics were unable to revive him.

Local authorities ordered the temporary closure of all venues in the surrounding area while emergency crews and police carried out their work. A probe has also been launched to determine the exact circumstances of the fight, and further details about how it began or the precise cause of death have not yet been officially confirmed.

This is yet another violent incident in Las Verónicas, an area known for its bars, clubs and late-night venues that attract thousands of holidaymakers every year, especially younger visitors. In the last few months, venue owners have joined forces to employ a uniformed security company to patrol the Verónicas strip, in an attempt to clean up the image of the area and make it safer.

Working with the Policía Local, they have successfully stopped street sellers of gas canisters and balloons, driven out pickpockets and targeted drug dealers, even as National Police raids have continued to focus on them in recent weeks.

The arrested man remains in custody while the investigation continues.
