British tourist fighting for his life following Benidorm attack
The critically ill 42-year-old will be driven from Alicante back to the UK for specialised treatment
A 42-year-old man from St Helens in Merseyside is battling for his life in a Spanish hospital after a brutal attack in Benidorm.
Andrew Frazer, a staff member at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, had travelled to the popular Costa Blanca resort for a last-minute birthday celebration with his brother Ian.
Tragedy struck when Andrew was allegedly punched in the head while on a night out, resulting in a severe brain injury. He was rushed to the hospital, where medical professionals performed a life-saving craniotomy to relieve pressure on his brain.
The procedure involved removing a portion of his skull, and Andrew was subsequently placed in an induced coma.
Although he has now regained consciousness, Andrew's condition remains critical. He is paralysed on the right side of his body and unable to speak, requiring constant care in the intensive care unit.
With no travel insurance to cover the costs, Andrew's family launched a fundraising campaign to bring him back to the UK for specialist treatment. The appeal raised an astonishing £30,000, but medical experts have deemed it unsafe for Andrew to travel by air ambulance.
Instead, the stepdad-of-two will embark on an arduous road trip back to Merseyside, accompanied by three paramedics and his fiancée, Carrie. The family hopes to get him to The Walton Centre in Aintree, where he can receive specialised care from neurologists.
Director of charity One Punch UK, Maxine Thompson Curl, said: "People lash out and they never believe the damage they are going to do by throwing that one punch.
"Our heads and our brains are very precious things that we need to be looking after. That poor lad went on his holiday and now he's in a hospital bed and we are hoping and praying we can get him back."
