Buck Moon to rise over Spain this week ahead of August's eclipse

The July full moon will be at its brightest this week and it's followed by one of the biggest astronomical events of 2026

Stargazers across Spain are in for a treat this week as July's full moon, better known as the Buck Moon, lights up the night sky.

The Buck Moon reaches its peak on Wednesday July 29 at around 4.35pm (Spanish mainland time). Although the exact moment happens during the afternoon, the best time to enjoy it will be after sunset, when the Moon rises above the eastern horizon and appears full and bright.

The name Buck Moon dates back hundreds of years and comes from Native American traditions. It's the time of year when male deer, known as bucks, begin growing their new antlers, making it a fitting name for July's full moon.

As with any celestial event, your best chance of enjoying it is to head somewhere away from streetlights and built-up areas. Clear skies and low light pollution will give you the brightest view, whether you're watching from the coast, the countryside or the mountains.

The Buck Moon is also one of the final major astronomical events before what promises to be one of the biggest spectacles of the year.

On Wednesday August 12, Spain will experience a total solar eclipse, the first visible from mainland Spain in more than a century. The path of totality will cross the country from Galicia to the Balearic Islands, passing over cities including A Coruña, Oviedo, León, Bilbao, Zaragoza, Valencia and Palma.

Elsewhere in Spain, the eclipse will still be visible as a partial eclipse, weather permitting. Because it takes place during the height of summer, astronomers are hopeful that clear skies will give millions of people the chance to witness this rare event.

So if you're planning to spend a warm summer evening outdoors this week, it's worth taking a few moments to look up. The Buck Moon should put on a spectacular display and it's only a taste of what's still to come in Spain's skies this August.
