Butane gas cylinder price hits four-year high just as Spain heads into the cooler months
The maximum price of a butane cylinder rises to €18.84 across Spain from September 15, its highest level since 2022
It's mid-September, the weather is starting to turn, and thousands of households across Spain who rely on butane canisters to heat their homes over winter are facing a price hike right on cue.
The maximum retail price of a traditional 12.5kg butane gas cylinder has gone up again, following an earlier rise back in July. According to a resolution published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) on Monday, the price will increase by 4.96% from today, Tuesday September 15, taking it to €18.84.
That's the highest the price has been in four years. The all-time record stands at €19.55 per cylinder, set in May 2022, before it dropped to €18.58 that November.
A temporary cut to the Hydrocarbons Tax under Royal Decree-Law 18/2026, in place since September 1, was meant to soften the blow. However, sources from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge explained that it hasn't been enough to offset rising raw material costs (+8.24%), higher freight costs (+10.27%) and the euro's appreciation against the dollar (+7.1%).
Unlike most household bills, the price of bottled LPG in containers of between 8kg and 20kg, which includes the standard butane cylinder, isn't deregulated. It's reviewed every two months, on the third Tuesday, by Spain's Directorate General for Energy Policy and Mines, using a formula set out in Order IET/389/2015 that factors in raw material costs, freight and the euro-dollar exchange rate, among other elements.
Each review is also capped at a 5% rise or fall, with any excess carried forward to future reviews. Without that cap, or the tax reduction, the new price would have been €18.89, which is hardly a dramatic difference anyway.
Butane remains a lifeline for many households, particularly in towns and areas without a connection to the mains gas network. Even so, its use is falling. Spain got through 57 million LPG cylinders of various sizes in 2025, but overall consumption has dropped by more than 12% since 2021 as more homes switch to other energy sources.
For now, anyone topping up their butane supply this autumn will be paying more than they have in years, just as they reach for it most.
