Camposol green waste area goes up in flames
The garden waste plot near the golf club caught fire this Wednesday

This Wednesday July 9, the green waste area on the lower part of Camposol Sector C behind the Golf Club caught fire.
The fire started in the afternoon and great plumes of black smoke could be seen issuing from the area of the golf club, which lost all power and had to cancel their gig for the night.
Fortunately, the firefighters were alerted promptly and came to put out the fire within the space of just a few short hours.
Residents have been saying for years that these green waste dumps on Camposol – not all of which contain exclusively green waste – are a health and safety hazard due to the risk of fire and the pests then can bring.
Indeed, this is not the first time one of these garden waste areas has caught fire. It is not yet known what caused the fire, whether a shard of discarded glass, hot ash or perhaps an arsonist.
The Town Council of Mazarrón recently pledged, once again, to monitor and clear these green waste areas, and say they are in the process of putting in CCTV cameras to stop people flytipping there and putting up signs to inform people of what can and cannot be disposed of.
One positive and unexpected outcome of this latest blaze is that there is now less flammable material in this particular green waste dump on Sector C and what there is has been dampened by the hoses, so it is not likely to go up in flames again any time soon.
However, the same cannot necessarily be said for the other green waste areas on Camposol, which still present a fire risk. It is hoped that, with the council’s new promised action, the long-running situation will be resolved once and for all.
